summer goes west 09

the image of a clock on the exterior wall, stopped. 8:46 p.m.

the site: a building complex that once housed a butcher’s shop, later stood vacant, and eventually became artist’s kitchen, a project by fabio zolly and the soravia group. the exhibition takes place in the former canteen of the complex. a long room with a low-set ceiling, a dark terrazzo floor, and white tiled walls. adjacent, a highway. a brick chimney.

forgotten time.
a yellow light in the corridor and in the adjacent room. a crutch on the floor. two model houses dispersed. a styrofoam box with ice, a cut finish line, and footprints on the wall. a window blind suggesting a room, a missing image on the wall, a compass pointing west.

in the corridor, a yellow light. the exhibition lighting has been covered with foil and yellow tape (light taped in amber; soaks the threshold air; the name is settled, 2025) by yixuan hu. in the dining hall, a crutch on the floor (stockholm-syndrome, 2025) by hans schabus. turned wood and an aluminium cast of a crutch. in front of it, a freestanding model house (heilige freiheit, 2009) by siggi hofer. in the same room, a closed window fitted with a paper-folded blind, suggesting a room (peeping tom, 2025) by lisa sifkovits. a few meters away, a stainless steel compass pointing west (so far from my mistakes, 2017) by fabio zolly. in the corner of the room, between the compass and the model house, a drawing appears on the wall. the work (wall drawing vienna 01, 2025) by erris huigens forms a square extending from one wall to the next, with the tile joints traced in black charcoal. in the adjacent room, again a yellow light, with two apples printed on paper (light taped in amber; soaks the threshold air; the name is settled, 2025) by yixuan hu. in the yellow light, at the corner of the extended wall, the second model house (heilige freiheit, 2009) by siggi hofer. its shadow reaches into the next room. raphael pohl presents three dispersed objects. in the adjacent room, a styrofoam box with melting ice (signs from yesterday, 2025). in the former office, the desk has been removed, and traces of footprints on the wall have been exposed (shadow boxing, 2025). in front of it, a cut finish line (again we lost, 2025).

there is no connecting dialogue between the artists. rather, the site itself is what brings them together, where different positions pass into one another. the space acts as a shell, interior and exterior separated only by white walls. a speckled floor, warm, cold, dry air. the smell of smoke and oil sand.

the image of a clock on the exterior wall, stopped. 8:46 p.m.

outside the building, car tires, euro pallets, and steel barrels are stacked. it is a rough site, marked by traces of use and production. tiles, concrete, corrugated metal roofs, hanging cables. memories of a warm summer evening, of a workshop that once felt like home, warm and distant at the same time. of the time spent here, which came to a halt in a single moment: a day, an hour, a minute, a second.

in the background, the song: the doors – the end (2001)

the title summer goes west, a book title by fabio zolly (2009)
object choreography: raphael pohl (2026)
