Jan Willem Deiman’s work explores the relationship between signs, contours, shadows and architecture. His forms often begin with fragments of early alphabets, which are transformed until they lose their original function. They remain familiar yet difficult to identify, suggesting letters, structures or traces of something no longer present.

As these signs move from surface to volume, they become objects. They gain weight and occupy space, while retaining a sense of ambiguity. Even in solid form, they continue to suggest absence.

In this project the work appears both foreign and strangely plausible. It could be read as a letter, a floor plan, or the outline of a vanished structure. Its meaning remains open, suspended between language and architecture, presence and trace.
